The terms "antique" and "estate" are often used interchangeably when referring to jewelry; however, there is a distinct and important difference. Antique jewelry is most often defined as any object that is over 100 years old. Estate jewelry simply refers to any piece that has been previously owned, but is not yet considered to be antique.
Antique jewelry is further categorized by the period in which it was created due to the distinctive trends of the time. With even a small amount of know-how, recognizing the period of origin can become very straightforward and enjoyable.
